| Summary, etc. | Du moment des années 1880, qui marque le début d’un véritable engouement pour Pascal, jusqu’à 1896, lorsque la publication de la célèbre Lettre sur les exigences de la pensée contemporaine en matière d’apologétique de Maurice Blondel lance un nouveau défi aux apologistes, les auteurs français qui ont incarné l’apologétique chrétienne fin-de-siècle, les protestants comme les catholiques, ont été confrontés à la nécessité de revenir encore une fois sur le sort qu’il convenait de réserver aux Pensées. Alors que le legs du Suisse Alexandre Vinet est en cours de difficile inventaire, les protestants finissent par conclure que l’apologie pascalienne a perdu nombre de ses vertus et qu’elle est inefficace sur les incrédules de la fin du xixe siècle. Les catholiques, au contraire, paraissent redécouvrir les mérites et les avantages d’une démarche apologétique qui permet de répondre aux principales inquiétudes d’un siècle finissant, alors même que la France est le théâtre d’une véritable « crise de la conscience catholique ». |

| Summary, etc. | From the time of the 1880s, which marked the beginning of a real craze for Pascal, until 1896, when the publication of the famous Lettre sur les exigences de la pensée contemporaine en matière d’apologétique by Maurice Blondel launched a new challenge to apologists, the French authors who embodied fin-de-siècle Christian apologetics, Protestants and Catholics alike, were confronted with the need to decide once again the fate that should be reserved for the Pensées. While they are in the process of evaluating, not without difficulty, the legacy of the Swiss Alexandre Vinet, Protestants end up concluding that the Pascalian apology has lost many of its virtues and that it is ineffective for unbelievers of the end of the 19th century. Catholics, on the contrary, seem to rediscover the merits and advantages of an apologetic approach which makes it possible to respond to the main concerns of a ending century, while France is the scene of a real « crisis of the Catholic conscience ». |
