Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This article aims to situate the Dialoghi d’amore (« Dialogues of Love ») of Leone Ebreo ( alias Yehudah Abravanel, Lisbon c. 1460 – Naples? before 1535) within the exegetical tradition inspired by the figure of Solomon. In putting forward an analysis of the structure, contents and names of the two interlocutors, it proposes to identify this text’s underlying literary model in the biblical episode of the meeting of Solomon and the queen of Sheba. The dialogue between Philo and Sophia is thus supposed to stage the confrontation between a learned Jew with « foreign » wisdom, dubious human learning. One finds the same design in the work of Leone’s father, Isaac Abravanel: in transposing it in a different linguistic, social and cultural context, the Dialoghi resume the comparison between the h?okmah of Solomon and the uncertain understandings of foreign peoples elaborated by Isaac in his commentary on the First Book of Kings, written in 1492. |
