| Summary, etc. | Résumé Deux traditions rapportent les origines et le lieu de naissance de l’Apôtre Paul : l’une du i er siècle vient des Actes des Apôtres et le fait naître à Tarse en Cilicie, l’autre du iv e siècle, venant de S. Jérôme, à Gischala, en Galilée. Cette seconde tradition est examinée en détail. Jérôme la qualifie de fabula, ce qui signifie, dans son vocabulaire, un on-dit fourni par ses interlocuteurs juifs. L’autorité de cette tradition semble donc faible. On conclut que Paul est né à Tarse dans une famille juive de la Diaspora et qu’il est venu en bas-âge à Jérusalem où il a reçu son éducation pharisienne. |

| Summary, etc. | Two traditions recount the Apostle Paul’s origins and birthplace : one, of the 1st century, comes from the Acts of the Apostles and would situate his birth in Tarsus of Cilicia, the other, of the 4th century and coming from St. Jerome, at Gischala in Galilee. The second is examined in detail. Jerome qualifies it as a fabula, which in his vocabulary means hearsay supplied by his Jewish interlocutors. The authority of this tradition would seem, then, to be weak. One concludes, then, that Paul was born at Tarsus in a Jewish family of the Diaspora and that at an early age he came to Jerusalem where he received his education as a Pharisee. |
