| Summary, etc. | RésuméPascal préparait une Apologie de la religion chrétienne. À sa mort, ses amis ne trouvèrent qu’un millier de notes sans suite. Cependant la plupart des spécialistes actuels ont adopté l’opinion de Louis Lafuma, reprise par Jean Mesnard, selon laquelle 1˚) la copie de ces notes faites après la mort de Pascal reproduirait l’ordre que celui-ci envisageait de suivre dans son ouvrage, et 2˚) Pascal aurait lui-même rassemblé ses notes dans des liasses qui correspondraient chacune à un chapitre de l’ouvrage. Francis Kaplan réfute ces deux hypothèses : d’une part, l’ordre de la copie est trop illogique pour qu’on puisse l’attribuer à Pascal, d’autre part, certaines liasses contiennent des papiers traitant de sujets trop différents pour qu’elles puissent correspondre à des chapitres. Kaplan propose, quant à lui, un classement déduit d’une cinquantaine d’indications de plan manuscrites, donc indiscutables. |

| Summary, etc. | An Apology for the Edition of Francis KaplanPascal prepared an Apology for the Christian religion. At his death, his friends found only a thousand isolated notes. The majority of current specialists, however, have adopted the position of Louis Lafuma, restated by Jean Mesnard, according to which 1) the copy of the notes made after Pascal’s death reproduces the order that he himself had in mind for following his work, and 2) it was Pascal himself who gathered these notes in bundles, each of which corresponds to a chapter of the work. Francis Kaplan refutes these two hypotheses on two grounds : first, the order followed by the copy is too illogical to be attributed to Pascal ; and secondly, certain bundles contain papers treating subjects too highly varied to correspond to chapters. Kaplan, on the other hand, proposes a classification deduced from about fifty indications regarding the plan which appears in the manuscripts, and which are, as such, beyond dispute. |
