Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | « There is no power but of God » (Rm 13,1). The juridical and political thought has often considered this statement of Saint Paul as the source of a Christian theological-political model, which necessarily implies an antidemocratic doctrine, simply oriented towards the good of the servants of God’s will. But it is possible to demonstrate that this reading of Rm 13,1 is null and void, by understanding Paul’s statement and its reception by the Church Fathers in their context. Even more : Rm 13,1 highlights the conditions of democracy and common good as good of everyone – non-idolatry of power (power as inappropriable place), religious liberty (respect for rights) and upholding of peace (law’s finality). In parallel to this political approach, Elena Lasida integrates these three conditions into her economic reading of Catholic social thought, which leads to the same reaffirmation of the specific Christian category of the common good : the « Good of the Communion » (Fessard). |
