| Summary, etc. | La Première Guerre mondiale a été rapidement perçue comme l’ouverture d’une nouvelle ère. Il devint difficile de croire au progrès global de l’humanité, et la civilisation même sembla menacée. D’un côté, la victoire des Alliés charria son lot d’espérances et d’idées nouvelles, dont certaines se sont inscrites durablement dans la réalité occidentale, mais seulement après 1945. Aujourd’hui, le « court xxe siècle » qui s’étend de 1914 à 1991 est principalement défini par la guerre totale, le totalitarisme, la Guerre Froide et le projet d’organiser l’Europe, tous ces objets étant reliés les uns aux autres. Nous sommes les héritiers du « court xxe siècle », mais les enjeux de la Première Guerre mondiale semblent très loin de nous. Cependant, certains aspects de cette grande crise européenne peuvent être très profitables à étudier pour les Européens d’aujourd’hui, confrontés aux difficultés du monde d’après 1991. |

| Summary, etc. | World War One has been most acknowledged opening a new era. Human Progress became difficult to believe in, civilization seemed threatened. On another side, victory brought hopes and new ideas, and part of them would turn into realities only after 1945. Today, the ‘Short twentieth century’, between 1914 and 1991 is most defined by total war, totalitarianism, Cold War and the project to organize Europe, including links between all these items. We are the heirs of the ‘Short Twentieth Century’, but the stakes of the World War One seem very far from us. However, some aspects of this great European crisis may be helpfully studied by contemporary Europeans confronted to post-1991 world difficulties. |
