| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | The Roman Catholic Church seems to be ill at ease when confronted with history, both as a scientific discipline and in terms of the evolution of humankind. For some, the Church appears to stand outside history, whereas for others it is subject to irrepressible political forces. These clichés do not stand up to an examination of the reforms, which the Church has undergone down through the centuries, especially those associated with Vatican II. A comparison between two protagonists of the reception of the Council, Joseph Ratzinger and Giuseppe Alberigo, shows that opposing interpretations are insignificant in the light of the common conviction that the Church must be reformed, not by virtue of intangible political principles nor in the name of contemporary modes of thought, but on the basis of the Gospel. The very form of the Bible displays how God is faithful to humankind throughout its history, and how in the midst of the latter He raises up His Church. |
