Summary, etc. La Renaissance a offert à la postérité l’image de Michel-Ange comme artiste idéal, affranchi de sa condition d’artisan et rivalisant avec les personnages les plus influents de son temps, voire avec Dieu lui-même.Pourtant, sa vie comme son art sont profondément marqués par les figures de la captivité, de la sujétion, du labeur et de la souffrance, qui émergent en particulier à l’occasion de la décoration, entre 1508 et 1512, de la voûte de la chapelle Sixtine à la demande du pape Jules II. La perception que Michel-Ange a de lui-même en esclave entre alors en tension avec l’affirmation progressive de son statut de faiseur d’images « divines ».L’analyse de ce phénomène permet ainsi d’approcher sous un angle inédit les mécanismes poétiques de l’art de Michel-Ange, qui fluctuent, de manière constante, entre l’orgueil de l’artiste divin et l’humilité de la créature de Dieu.

Summary, etc. The Renaissance has offered to the legacy the image of Michelangelo as an ideal artist, freed from his artisan condition, dealing with the most influential individuals of his own time, even with God Himself.However, the figures of captivity, constraint, toil, and suffering profoundly marked his life and his art, particularly during the decoration of the Sistine Chapel ceiling in behalf of Pope Julius II from 1508 to 1512. The perception that Michelangelo has of himself as a slave at the time enters into tension with the growing affirmation of his status as a maker of “divine” images.The study of this phenomenon allows thereby approaching in a new fashion the poetic mechanisms of Michelangelo’s art, which invariably fluctuate between the pride of the god-like artist and the humility of the human creature.
