Weil sur l’impasse de la « guerre révolutionnaire », son expérience de la barbarie partagée à Bernanos après la guerre d’Espagne, l’ont conduit à méditer un phénomène de « substitution », d’« inversion des moyens et des fins » qui, croisant dans les années 1930 l’inspiration de Gandhi et la réflexion parallèle de Maritain sur la nécessité d’une « purification des moyens par les fins », l’a conduit au « Projet d’infirmières de première ligne » proposé aux Alliés en 1943. On peut mettre en parallèle le type d’action et de sacrifice que cela impliquait et celui d’E. Hillesum au camp de Westerbork, car dans les deux cas, il s’agit de lutter contre la force et la barbarie avec les « armes de l’esprit », d’opposer à un monde « devenu fou par manque d’amour » la « folie d’amour » consistant à offrir sa vie en faisant descendre l’amour de Dieu au cœur de son absence. |

| Summary, etc. | Weil’s reflection on the impasse of the “revolutionary war” – her experience of the barbarism following the Spanish civil war (an experience shared with Bernanos) – led her to meditate on a phenomenon of “substitution”, of “inversion of means and ends”. Conceived in the 1930s, this idea combined Gandhi’s insights with Maritain’s contemporaneous and parallel reflections on the necessity of a “purification of means through ends”. Ultimately, it led Weil to articulate her “Plan for an Organisation of Front-Line Nurses” proposed to the Allied Forces in 1943. We can compare this type of action and the sacrifice it involved with that of Etty Hillesum’s actions at the Westerbork Transit Camp. In both cases it is a question of fighting against the forces of barbarism with the “weapons of the spirit” ; of opposing a world “gone mad through lack of love” with “the madness of love”, an opposition which entails offering one’s life by bringing down the love of God into the heart of his absence. |
