| Summary, etc. | On voudrait vivre « sous le soleil de Dieu » (Ecc. 8,15), mais on se découvre Sous le soleil de Satan. Nul plus que Bernanos ne l’a vu, et aussi ne l’a su – car la littérature atteint ce que ni la philosophie ni la théologie ne savent dire, en particulier pour ce qui est du tourment du mal. Caché sous la figure du « maquignon picard », et donc d’un homme ordinaire, le diable ne se laisse pas voir ; il aime plutôt à se déguiser. Il n’y a pas le mal d’un côté et le bien de l’autre chez Bernanos, mais plutôt « le mal sous la figure du bien ». Telle est sa suprême ruse, et aussi sa plus sûre manière de nous percer à jour. Brouillant les frontières, se faisant passer pour personne alors qu’il est quelqu’un, préférant le « Froid » de la glace au chaud des flammes, et (se) couchant avec l’abbé Donissan pour lui ôter son souffle, Satan nous guette toujours – moins pour se montrer que pour nous piéger. Une « lecture philosophique » de ces pages fulgurantes de Sous le soleil de Satan (rencontre de l’abbé Donissan avec le maquignon picard) élèvera Bernanos au rang des plus grands penseurs catholiques. Nul n’en avait douté. Mais le lire, et le relire, permet de le confirmer. |

| Summary, etc. | We would like to live “under the sun of God” (Eccl 8:15), but we find ourselves Under the Sun of Satan. Nobody has seen this, and also known this, better than Bernanos – for literature reaches what neither philosophy nor theology can say, in particular when it comes to the torment of evil. Hidden under the appearance of the “Picardy horse dealer,” and therefore of an ordinary man, the devil does not let himself be seen; he loves, rather, to disguise himself. We do not find evil on one side and good on the other in Bernanos, but rather “evil under the appearance of good.” This is the devil’s supreme ruse, and also his surest way of seeing right through us. Blurring the boundaries, making himself pass for no one when he is someone, preferring the “Cold” of ice to the heat of flames, and lying (down) with Father Donissan to rob him of his breath, Satan is always lying in wait for us – less to show himself than to trap us. A “philosophical reading” of these searing pages of Under the Sun of Satan (Father Donissan’s encounter with the Picardy horse dealer) will elevate Bernanos to the rank of one of the greatest Catholic thinkers. Nobody doubted this. But reading him, and rereading him, permits us to confirm it. |
