| Summary, etc. | A luxurious and highly original mosaic was unearthed in August 2018 in Avenches/Aventicum (Switzerland) during works along the town’s bypass road. The building was located 500 m from the centre of the ancient city, in an area that is still poorly understood and bordering the main road of the city. The mosaic consists of a richly decorated carpet, surrounded by a wide yellow border dotted with small, coloured marble plates imported from the most famous quarries in Antiquity. In the centre, a medallion shows a garden vase on which two birds are perched. The marbles and porphyry can be linked to the nearby Cigognier sanctuary, which dates from the same period (late 1st century AD). Removed as a single block, the mosaic was restored and presented to the public in May 2022 as part of a temporary exhibition. |

| Summary, etc. | Une mosaïque luxueuse, d’une grande originalité, a été mise au jour en août 2018 à Avenches/Aventicum (Suisse) à l’occasion de travaux en bordure de la route de contournement de la ville. Le bâtiment se trouvait à 500 m du centre de l’agglomération antique, dans un quartier encore mal connu, bordant la voie principale de la cité. La mosaïque se compose d’un tapis richement décoré, entouré d’une large bordure jaune parsemée de plaquettes de marbres colorés, importés des carrières les plus célèbres de l’Antiquité. Au centre, un médaillon montre un vase de jardin sur lequel deux oiseaux sont perchés. Les marbres et porphyres sont à mettre en lien avec le chantier du sanctuaire du Cigognier, situé à proximité et daté de la même époque (fin du ier siècle apr. J.-C.). Déposée « en bloc », la mosaïque a été restaurée puis présentée au public en mai 2022 lors d’une exposition temporaire. |
