520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The study of the Zanzibar naval blockade, set up by the British and the German navy – between December 1888 and September 1889 – to allegedly suppress the slave trade and the arms traffic devastating East Africa at the time, is a great opportunity to observe the complex relationship between humanitarian discourse, international law and colonial interventions in the late nineteenth century. In fact, this naval operation gives us a chance to better grasp the new emerging concept of “intervention for humanity” in international relations and international law while colonial expansion had reached a new historical surge. Finally, the Zanzibar blockade, due to its global dimension and consequences, was a significant benchmark in the history of humanitarian law in international relations.
