| Summary, etc. | Résumé À partir de leur entrée en guerre, les États-Unis s’engagent dans un effort important de propagande contre le nazisme. Support radiophonique de l’Office of War Information, Voice of America figure comme l’une des pièces majeures de ce dispositif et les Français y participent par le biais de son bureau français, la « Voix de l’Amérique », dirigé par Pierre Lazareff et Lewis Galantière. Deux voix prestigieuses, celles de l’intellectuel catholique Jacques Maritain et de Paul Vignaux, intellectuel syndicaliste, servent particulièrement bien cette guerre des ondes américaine. La tâche n’est pourtant pas aisée, à la « Voix de l’Amérique », comme, plus généralement, au sein de l’OWI, ballottés entre la défense des buts de guerre démocratiques et la nécessaire soumission aux impératifs stratégiques. Les émissions françaises de Voice of America vont cependant au-delà de la seule exaltation de l’effort de guerre du gouvernement américain. La radio, qui voit s’exprimer gaullistes comme antigaullistes, forme en effet un milieu très composite incarnant à sa façon la continuité de la culture française outre-Atlantique. |

| Summary, etc. | As soon as the United States entered the war, it undertook major anti Nazi propaganda. The Office of War Information’s Voice of America was one of the main tools of this system, and the French took part in it through its French office, the “Voix de l’Amérique”, directed by Pierre Lazareff and Lewis Galantière. Two prestigious intellectual voices, that of the Catholic Jacques Maritain, and Paul Vignaux, the trade unionist, were particularly effective in this war of American air waves. It was not an easy job, either at the “Voix de l’Amérique” or within the OWI, torn between the defense of democratic war aims and the necessary submission to strategic imperatives. But the French programs of the Voice of America went beyond the mere exaltation of the American government’s war effort. The radio that broadcast both gaullists and antigaullists formed a very composite circle embodying the continuity of French culture overseas. |
