| Summary, etc. | Résumé En 1938 commencent à arriver directement aux autorités coloniales de Gold Coast (ancien nom du Ghana) des demandes d’asile émanant de juifs allemands et autrichiens, puis d’autres pays d’Europe où les persécutions s’intensifient. Cet article étudie l’attitude des autorités coloniales à l’égard de ces réfugiés potentiels et analyse les raisons du refus systématique dont leurs demandes ont fait l’objet. Il replace cet épisode dans le contexte plus large de la politique britannique et de celle du Colonial Office, tout en insistant sur les conditions particulières à la Gold Coast où une partie des élites, traditionnelles et modernes, se sont mobilisées pour manifester leur solidarité envers les juifs d’Europe. Enfin l’article évoque le destin des quelques réfugiés juifs qui, sans s’adresser directement aux autorités coloniales, ont effectivement trouvé refuge dans ce territoire. |

| Summary, etc. | In 1938 demands for asylum began to arrive directly to the colonial authorities of the Gold Coast (former name of Ghana) from German and Austrian Jews and then from other European countries where persecution was intensifying. This article studies the attitude of the colonial authorities concerning these potential refugees and analyzes the reasons for the systematic refusal their demands met with. It situates this episode in the wider context of the British and Colonial Office policies, while emphasizing the specific situation of the Gold Coast in which part of the both traditional and modern elites got together to show their solidarity towards the European Jews. Lastly, the article deals with the few Jewish refugees who managed to find refuge in this territory but without going through the colonial authorities directly. |
