| Summary, etc. | Résumé Depuis une dizaine d’années, Shanghai compte parmi les villes du monde se développant le plus rapidement. Son paysage urbain a été complètement bouleversé. La ville se projette dans l’avenir avec une violence qui, du passé, semble faire table rase. Pourtant le jaillissement de la nouvelle métropole, symbole d’une modernisation et d’une Chine triomphantes, se nourrit d’un très vif sentiment de continuité historique. Les autorités aussi bien que la population ne cessent de se référer à l’expérience du « Vieux Shanghai », le Shanghai d’avant la révolution, qui dans un contexte d’oppression impérialiste avait présidé à la première modernisation chinoise. L’article s’interroge sur l’utilité et la validité d’un tel détour par l’histoire. |

| Summary, etc. | Over the last ten years, Shanghai has one of the fasting growing world cities. Its urban landscape has undergone a great upheaval. The city is thrusting itself in the future with a violence that seems to be erasing the past. But the new city’s springing forth, symbol of a triumphant China and modernization, is fueled by a strong feeling of historic continuity. Both the authorities and the population refer constantly to the experience of « Old Shanghai », the pre-revolution Shanghai, which in a context of imperialist oppression had been at the origin of the first Chinese modernization. The article questions the usefulness and relevance of this historical tack. |
