| Summary, etc. | RésuméReprésentant du régime en zone occupée pendant quelques mois, fidèle soutien du maréchal Pétain et convaincu de sa destinée de chef de la Résistance, le général de La Laurencie relève de la catégorie des vichysto-résistants : des résistants actifs dont l’expérience vichyste (celle de soutiens effectifs de l’État français) marque l’identité résistante. Retracer l’itinéraire du général de La Laurencie peut contribuer, d’une part, à clarifier l’idéal-type vichysto-résistant et, d’autre part, à mettre en lumière le défi que ces hommes posèrent à l’ensemble de la Résistance. Rejeté par Vichy en raison de son anglophilie et de son opposition à Darlan, La Laurencie nourrit de grandes ambitions, alimentées par certains chefs de la Résistance de zone Sud qui l’imaginèrent un temps en porte-drapeau. S’il ne fut sans doute pas, aux yeux des dirigeants des États-Unis, l’alternative à de Gaulle qu’on a parfois décrite, il reçut incontestablement des fonds d’origine américaine et rechercha le soutien des Anglo-Américains, afin de prendre la tête d’un gouvernement pro-allié. Son échec, largement imputable à son engagement dans un rapport de force avec la France libre qui tourna vite à l’avantage des gaullistes, est à la fois source et symptôme d’une première cristallisation de l’identité de la Résistance au tournant de l’année 1941-1942. « L’affaire La Laurencie » est en effet rapidement devenu un topos du discours gaulliste de la Résistance, dans lequel elle incarne « le prélude à l’affaire Giraud ». |

| Summary, etc. | As a representative of the Vichy regime in the occupied zone for a few months, a faithful supporter of Marshal Pétain and convinced of his destiny as a Resistance leader, General de La Laurencie belongs to the category of “ vichysto-résistants”. This defines active Resistance members whose role in Vichy (effective support for the French State) gives a particular character to their identity as Resistance members. General La Laurencie’s biography contributes, on the one hand, to clarify the definition of the “ vichysto-résistant” type, and on the other hand, to highlight the challenge these men posed to Resistance identity as a whole. Rejected by the Vichy government as an anglophile and an opponent of Darlan, La Laurencie had great ambitions which were encouraged by some of the Southern zone Resistance leaders who saw him, for a while, as a potential standard bearer. Although in the eyes of the United-States Administration he was probably not an alternative to de Gaulle as it is sometimes suggested, he undoubtedly received American funds, and actively sought support from the Anglo-Americans to become leader of a French pro-Allies government. He failed, largely due to his power struggle with the Free France – an unbalanced battle he very quickly lost. This failure was both a source and a symptom of the early crystallization of Resistance identity, during the years 1941-1942. The “La Laurencie affair” rapidly became part of Gaullist Resistance discourse in which it embodied the prelude to the “Giraud affair”. |
