| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article analyse les évolutions de la population et leurs répercussions politiques en Argentine des années 1920 aux années 1940. Il traite de différents moyens par lesquels des institutions et des spécialistes en démographie, statistique et médecine réagirent aux diminutions du taux de natalité et de l’immigration européenne après la crise économique des années 1930. Pour comprendre la configuration spécifique de « l’argument démographique » en Argentine, doivent être pris en compte, d’une part, les conflits entre les gouvernements provincial et fédéral pour le contrôle du système de recueil des données statistiques, essentiel à la mise en œuvre des recensements nationaux ; et, d’autre part, l’attrait durable d’une rhétorique moralisatrice dans un pays majoritairement catholique, où la peur de dépopulation et de déclin racial était répandue parmi les élites. Enfin, sont étudiées les mesures proposées pour contrebalancer la dépopulation – de l’hygiène sociale à la politique nataliste, l’immigration sélective et l’eugénisme –, et leur impact actuel sur les caractéristiques démographiques du pays. |

| Summary, etc. | The article analyzes the population evolutions and their political repercussions in Argentina from the 1920s to the 1940s. It deals with the various means by which demographic, statistical, and medical specialists and institutions reacted to the decreases of the birth rate and of European immigration after the economic crisis of the 1930s. To understand the specific configuration of the “demographic argument” in Argentina one must take into account, on the one hand, the conflicts between the provincial and federal governments over the control of the statistic-gathering system, essential to the implementation of the national censuses ; and, on the other hand, the enduring appeal of a moralizing rhetoric in a predominantly Catholic country, where fears of depopulation and racial decline were widespread among the elite. Finally, are studied measures proposed to counteract the depopulation – from social hygiene to pronatalism, selective immigration, and eugenics –, and their actual impact on the demographic make-up of the country. |
