| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’article analyse l’implication des démographes français dans la lutte contre l’alcoolisme après la seconde guerre mondiale. Une attention particulière est prêtée à leur rôle dans la reproblématisation, scientifique et politique, de ce « fléau social » par excellence, qui relevait jusqu’ici du domaine de compétences exclusif des médecins. L’intérêt pour l’alcoolisme manifesté par l’Institut national d’études démographiques (INED) traduisait l’inquiétude croissante face aux conséquences démographiques de l’alcool dans les cercles populationnistes depuis l’entre-deux-guerres. De fait, les chercheurs de l’INED furent encouragés par leur directeur, Alfred Sauvy, et par le président du conseil technique de l’Institut, Robert Debré, à mener des recherches approfondies sur ce sujet, et à fournir des expertises au Haut Comité d’étude et d’information sur l’alcoolisme (HCEIA). Paradoxalement, au lieu d’ajouter de la crédibilité scientifique à la lutte populationniste contre les « fléaux sociaux », leur intervention ouvrit la voie à une nouvelle approche de l’alcoolisme, centrée sur la notion de « risque de santé ». |

| Summary, etc. | The essay analyzes the mobilization of French demographers in “the fight against alcoholism” after the Second World War. Particular attention is paid to their role in the scientific and politic re-problematization of this quintessentially French “social plague”, which had hitherto remained the province of physicians. The interest in alcoholism manifested by the National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED) only reflected the growing anxiety over the demographic impact of alcoholism in “populationist” circles since the interwar period. As a result, INED researchers were encouraged by their director, Alfred Sauvy, and the head of the institute’s scientific committee, Robert Debré, to research the issue thoroughly, and provide expertise to the High Committee for Study and Information on Alcoholism (HCEIA). Paradoxically, instead of adding scientific credibility to the populationists’ fight against “social plagues”, their intervention paved the way for a new approach to alcoholism, centred on the notion of “health risk”. |
