| Summary, etc. | The postage stamp can serve as a means of promoting the social, educational and philanthropic aspects of the fight against diseases in general and infectious diseases (such as AIDS, associated with HIV infection) in particular. The recent but eventful history of this virus and the disease that it causes has prompted the issue of a considerable number of postage stamps worldwide – barely fewer than the number dedicated to combating tuberculosis and malaria. The present semiotic review of 356 international postage stamps on HIV/AIDS is the first to have used a multicriterion evaluation grid based on the interpretation of indices, icons, and symbols. The stereotypes and the most novel representations and the messages conveyed on the cultural and ideological levels are thus characterized with regard to the disease's historical, scientific and epidemiological contexts. This analysis concludes with a humanist plea as an illustration of Hippocratic and Galenic values: prevention, education, solidarity, empathy, healthcare, and research. |

| Summary, etc. | Le timbre-poste est un moyen de servir la promotion sociale, éducative et philanthropique de la lutte contre de nombreuses maladies, notamment infectieuses, comme le sida associé à l’infection par le VIH. L’histoire de ce virus, récente mais riche, et de la maladie qu’il provoque, s’est doublée d’une émission internationale de timbres-poste assez considérable, ne le disputant qu’à celle dédiée à la lutte contre la tuberculose ou le paludisme. Pour la première fois dans la littérature, par une démarche sémiotique et sur la base d’un recueil international de 356 timbres internationaux relatifs à la thématique du VIH et du sida, les auteurs ont analysé cet outil de communication à travers une grille de lecture multiple, fondée sur l’interprétation de valeurs indiciaires, iconiques et symboliques. Les stéréotypes et représentations plus originales, les messages véhiculés, sur les plans culturel et idéologique, ont été ainsi décryptés en perspective des contextes historique, scientifique et épidémiologique de la maladie. Cette analyse conclut à un plaidoyer humaniste comme illustration des valeurs hippocratiques et galéniques : prévention, éducation, solidarité, empathie, soins et recherche pour ces patients. |
