| Summary, etc. | RésuméDepuis l’été 2006, les lycéens français et allemands des classes de terminale ainsi que leurs professeurs ont à leur disposition un manuel d’histoire rédigé en commun par des historiens des deux pays, au contenu rigoureusement identique et en même temps conforme aux programmes en vigueur dans les deux pays. Quelles sont les origines et les finalités de cette entreprise ? Quels facteurs l’ont rendue possible ? Quels défis a-t-il fallu relever pour arriver à ce résultat ? Quelle est enfin la portée historique, didactique et politique de cette première mondiale ? Telles sont les questions auxquels l’article entreprend de répondre. Pour ce faire sont successivement envisagées la genèse du projet (40e anniversaire du traité de l’Élysée en 2003), les initiatives politiques et administratives préalables au travail proprement dit, l’élaboration du cahier des charges par un comité de pilotage paritaire, la préhistoire de ce projet et les conditions institutionnelles qui l’ont rendu possible (tentatives précédentes, partenariats multiples entre historiens français et allemands), les difficultés et défis survenus en cours de rédaction du manuel – difficultés et défis qui tiennent non tant à des conflits sur l’interprétation du passé qu’à des différences profondes sur les modes de rapport au passé et les manières d’enseigner l’histoire –, les réponses, enfin, qui leur ont été apportées. |

| Summary, etc. | Since the summer of 2006, high school students in their final year of study in France and Germany as well as their teachers have had at their disposal a textbook for history, jointly written by historians from both countries, which content is strictly identical while at the same time in conformity with both syllabus. What were the origins and purposes of this joint enterprise? What factors made it possible and what affected the outcome? And, finally, what is the historical, didactic and political significance of the first ever attempt ? These are the questions this article seeks to answer. To do so involves reconstructing the genesis of the project (during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the Franco-German Treaty in 2003), the political and administrative work before the project could begin, the development of a frame of reference by a joint steering committee, the pre-history of the project and the institutional conditions which made it possible (e.g., earlier initiatives, multiple partnerships between French and German historians). It also involves consideration of the difficulties and challenges arising during the textbook writing, not so much from profoundly different interpretations of the past, but from very different ways of writing about and teaching history. |
