| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe mouvement de Mai 68, par sa puissance et son originalité, imprime sa marque sur les quatre décennies qui suivent. La grève générale et la contestation étudiante permettent l’éclosion d’un mythe autogestionnaire dans les années 1970, fondé sur la primauté du mouvement social. Cette approche repose cependant sur une lecture réductrice des événements de Mai comme des luttes ultérieures, surestimant souvent les ruptures au détriment des continuités. Le début des années 1980 voit l’autogestion s’effacer de l’horizon politique et social, et la notion même de « mouvement social » être remise en question, pendant que s’impose une lecture purement « culturelle » de Mai. La transformation radicale du contexte n’empêche pas la référence à 1968 de revenir de manière obsessionnelle lors des grands mouvements de 1986 et de 1995. La lecture de ces derniers au prisme de Mai obscurcit la compréhension des événements eux-mêmes, mais éclaire les enjeux qui opposent entre eux acteurs et analystes du mouvement social. |

| Summary, etc. | The May 68 movement, through its power and originality, has left its mark on the four decades that followed it. The general strike and student protest fostered the birth of a self-management myth in the 1970s, based on the great importance of the social movement. This approach nevertheless relied on a reductive reading of the May events as future conflicts, often overestimating ruptures to the detriment of continuities. The early 1980s saw self-management fade from the political and social horizon and the very notion of “social movement” challenged, while a purely “cultural” reading was taking over. The radical transformation of the context did not stop the reference to 1968 from obsessively coming back during the big 1986 and 1995 movements. Looking at them through the May prism clouds the comprehension of the events themselves but highlights the stakes dividing the players and analysts of the social movement. |
