| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe mouvement de Mai 68 a pour effet de révéler et de radicaliser une crise de légitimité des intellectuels. Les multiples interprétations élaborées par ces deniers cristallisent cependant des représentations du mouvement à travers lesquelles les intellectuels vont restructurer leurs engagements dans l’après-Mai 68 pour tenter de reconstruire une figure légitime de l’« intellectuel engagé ». Après la forte polarisation exercée par les groupes « gauchistes » et la lecture révolutionnaire de Mai 68, c’est cependant la quête de l’autonomie qui inspire cette redéfinition, notamment à travers la figure de l’« intellectuel spécifique » de Michel Foucault. Cette volonté d’autonomie débouche, à partir du milieu des années 1970, sur la rupture avec les grands paradigmes de l’engagement radicalisé en Mai 68 : le marxisme, le tiers-mondisme, l’anticapitalisme. Ce « désengagement » des clercs se poursuit, à partir de la deuxième moitié des années 1980 par le retour critique sur les aspects plus culturels et sociétaux de Mai 68. À partir du milieu des années 1990, la montée d’une contestation antilibérale s’accompagne de la résurgence de thématiques héritées de Mai 68 au point que, quarante ans après, Mai 68 projette encore son ombre sur les débats intellectuels, redevenant même un enjeu du positionnement droite-gauche. |

| Summary, etc. | The May 68 movement has revealed and radicalized a legitimacy crisis among intellectuals. The numerous interpretations they elaborated crystallized representations of the movement through which intellectuals were going to redefine their commitments in the aftermath of May 68 in an attempt to reconstruct a legitimate figure of the « committed intellectual ». Following the strong polarization exerted by leftist groups and the revolutionary reading of May 68, the quest for autonomy was, however, what inspired the redefinition, notably with Michel Foucault’s figure of the « specific intellectual ». Starting in the mid 1970s, this desire for autonomy brought about a break with the leading paradigms of May 68’s radicalized commitment: Marxism, support for the Third World, anticapitalism. This « disengagement » of scholars continued with the return, starting in the second half of the 1980s, of the criticism of the more cultural and societal aspects of May 68. Since the mid 1990s mounting anti free market protest has been accompanied by a reappearance of themes inherited from May 68 to such an extent that, forty years later, May 68 still casts its shadow over intellectual debates and has even again become a issue in left-right demarcation. |
