520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Are they still child stealers? A study of representations of social workers in the mediaThis article presents a research study based on interviews and analysis of twenty films and twenty-one novels representative of the image of social workers in the media. Five categories of persona were identified: hero, positive image, negative image, neutral and ambivalent. Most figures studied were women. Very few characters were described as negative, contrary to expectations. There were also few “heroes”. The author has constructed a typology of these characters and shows why it is important that social workers develop strategies to influence media representations and to be aware of stereotypes perpetuated by them. |
