| Summary, etc. | La Renamo mena, avec le soutien de l’Afrique du Sud de l’apartheid, une guerre de seize années (1977-1992) contre le régime « marxiste-léniniste » du Frelimo. Elle est ici éclairée par des sources jamais mobilisées : la transcription des messages radio échangés entre le commandement en chef et ses groupes locaux de 1983 à 1985, juste avant, pendant et juste après les premières négociations entre le régime de Maputo et celui de l’apartheid. L’auteur explore les caractéristiques de cette guérilla qui trouva le soutien d’une partie de la paysannerie du pays. Il se penche sur les modalités d’entrée dans la guérilla, étudie les relations complexes nourries avec la population civile, notamment les femmes et scrute les constructions identitaires qui en découlèrent, tant pour les individus que pour les groupes. |

| Summary, etc. | The “armed bandits” of MozambiqueWith the support of apartheid South Africa, Renamo carried out 16 years of war (1977–1992) against the “Marxist-Leninist” Frelimo regime. New light is shed on this war by drawing on heretofore untapped sources: transcriptions of radio exchanges between the Renamo commander-in-chief and the group’s local branches from 1983 to 1985 – i.e. just before, during, and after the first negotiations between the Maputo regime and apartheid South Africa. This article explores the characteristics of this guerrilla war, one which was supported by a segment of the country’s peasantry. It also scrutinises the group’s guerrilla warfare methods, the complex relationships it cultivated with civilians, especially women, and examines the nuanced identities that these relationships helped to shape, for both individuals and the group as a whole. |
