Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | The works of illustrator Andreas Paul Weber (1893-1980) are widely regarded as “icons of antifascism”. Yet, academic studies have cast doubt on the artist’s “resistance” during the Nazi era, carried out in the name of an extreme and “barbaric” nationalism, and then relayed through his participation in the national-socialist propaganda system. Which processes have made it possible for interpretations to evolve? Using the traditional communication model, we can trace how the performances created by the image issuers (the artist and exhibition officials) have changed the meanings of these visual messages, and how, in the post-war system of significances, these new meanings have met the receivers’ horizons of expectation. A 1934 work, which represents a screaming horse, gives a good example of Weber’s “visual opportunism”: first suggesting the sad fate of Germany should it deviate from the ultranationalist path advocated by the national-bolshevik movement, the work is later presented as a premonition of the disasters of Hitler’s war – after Guernica and Picasso’s tortured horses, who would doubt this interpretation? |
