| Summary, etc. | À partir du cas de la région de Clydeside autour de Glasgow et par un large recours aux sources orales, l’article envisage les manières dont la désindustrialisation affecte de façon ambivalente le bien-être des ouvriers. Les sources examinées suggèrent que la désindustrialisation est l’un des principaux facteurs des taux de morbidité et de mortalité importants que connaît la région de Clydeside par rapport à la moyenne écossaise. L’analyse de témoignages d’ouvriers affectés par la désindustrialisation montre qu’aux côtés d’un récit dominant de perte et de dégradation de la santé, coexiste de manière plus ténue mais néanmoins manifeste l’histoire d’une libération, véritable émancipation vis-à-vis d’emplois industriels dangereux et nocifs. |

The evidence for the Clydeside region suggests that deindustrialization was one of the key causal agents in the widening gap in morbidity and mortality between Clydeside and the rest of Scotland. Together with a dominant narrative of loss and health erosion there also co-existed a more muted but clear “liberation” story of emancipation from dangerous and toxic industrial jobs. |
