| Summary, etc. | Depuis les débuts de la colonisation française au Vietnam (vers 1870) jusqu’en 1945, la police coloniale ne cessa de recevoir d’innombrables plaintes pour enlèvements. Ces cas appartenaient à un plus vaste problème existant en Indochine coloniale, celui de l’achat et de la vente d’êtres humains en Indochine coloniale au sein de ce que des chercheurs ont identifié comme étant des réseaux de traite humaine. Cet article montre comment les victimes de cette traite et les habitants conscients de la menace rendirent compte de leurs expériences. Une analyse des articles de presse publiés dans les journaux vietnamiens révèle quel sentiment indéniable de panique ces enlèvements purent provoquer au sein de la population vietnamienne. Les journalistes vietnamiens présentèrent le danger de la traite d’êtres humains sous des traits genrés et racialisés caricaturaux, identifiant continuellement les Chinois et les vieilles femmes vietnamiennes sans mari comme les malfaiteurs, à tort ou à raison. En faisant paraître des récits personnels de victimes, les articles de presse humanisèrent ces dernières comme les Français ne le firent jamais. |

| Summary, etc. | The Trafficking of Women and Children in Colonial Vietnam (1920-1940)From the onset of French colonization (c. 1870) in Vietnam until 1945, the colonial police received countless kidnapping complaints. These kidnappings were part of a larger problem involving the buying and selling of people in colonial Indochina, which comprised what some scholars have identified as human trafficking networks. This article will show how rescued victims as well as communities that were threatened by trafficking portrayed their experiences. An analysis of articles printed in the Vietnamese press reveals an undeniable sense of panic that the kidnappings provoked within the local community. Vietnamese journalists presented the threat of human trafficking via gendered and racialised caricatures, persistently labelling ethnic Chinese and unmarried older Vietnamese women as the villains — whether accurately or not. By printing stories of victims’ personal experiences, these newspaper articles humanized victims in a way that French authorities never did. |
