| Summary, etc. | Entre 1967 et 1973, la politique extérieure française mit à profit plusieurs satellites soviétiques pour appuyer la détente en Europe. De ce point de vue, la Pologne et la Roumanie furent des interlocuteurs privilégiés. La Hongrie, cependant, parvint à intéresser la France à son sort, en dépit d’un passé difficile entre les deux pays. Les réformes intérieures mises en place par les dirigeants communistes, de même que leur attitude modérée lors de la crise du Printemps de Prague, distinguèrent Budapest de la majorité des autres démocraties populaires. Toutefois, la Hongrie ne pouvant s’affirmer comme la Roumanie sur la scène internationale, les relations franco-hongroises échouèrent à changer d’envergure, avant l’ouverture de la Conférence sur la sécurité et la coopération en Europe (CSCE). |

| Summary, etc. | France’s Hungarian Policy Between 1967 and 1973Between 1967 and 1973, French foreign policy employed several Soviet satellites to promote détente in Europe. In this context, Poland and Romania were particularly useful contacts. Hungary, however, also managed to attract French attention, in spite of a tense past between the two countries. In fact, the domestic reforms implemented by Hungary’s Communist leadership and their moderate stance towards the Prague Spring set Hungary apart from most of the other “popular democracies”. Nevertheless, as Hungary was unable to assert itself on the international stage like Romania, Franco-Hungarian relations did not radically change until the advent of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE). |
