| Summary, etc. | Depuis quelques années, les travailleurs sociaux sont exposés à la manifestation de faits religieux. Dans ce contexte, les intervenants se mobilisent autour du principe de laïcité. Selon la traduction qui en est faite, la mise en acte de ce principe aboutit à des orientations distinctes dans les positionnements professionnels et l’accompagnement socio-éducatif proposé aux personnes accompagnées. Considérée comme un dogme occultant tout débat, comme une norme « qui s’impose à tous », ou comme un cadre de travail ouvrant sur des perspectives d’intervention, la laïcité fait l’objet d’usages différenciés. Ainsi, si les organisations du secteur cherchent de plus en plus souvent à expliciter le sens de ce principe, les travailleurs sociaux confrontés aux faits religieux, quant à eux, réagissent en fonction du rapport qu’ils entretiennent avec les questions religieuses et la manière dont elles sont abordées en France. Dans cette perspective, élucider ce que recouvre l’application du principe de laïcité peut contribuer à conforter, à nuancer ou à mettre à mal un ensemble de conceptions rattachées à ce principe. |

| Summary, etc. | Over the past years, social workers have been exposed to manifestations of religion and religious practice. In this context, practitioners are mobilized in relation to the principles of laicity. According to how this concept is understood, its application leads professionals to a variety of distinct postures and orientations in the way they work with people they are supporting. Considered as a dogma that obscures all debate, as a norm that is “imposed on everyone” or as a framework that opens perspectives of intervention, laicity leads to different practical usages. Thus while organisations in the social sector seek to explain the meaning of this principle, social workers confronted with religious events and behaviour react as a function of their own relation to religious questions and the way they are understood in France. From this perspective, elucidating what the application of the laicity principle covers can contribute to reinforcing, to qualifying or to hinder a group of conceptions attached to the principle. |
