| Summary, etc. | Cet article, en inscrivant, aux États-Unis, le mouvement du rétablissement dans l’histoire des systèmes de santé mentale, développe le point de vue de l’auteur sur son actualité et son devenir. Ce mouvement est à resituer dans le contexte évolutif des idées de justice sociale et des luttes visant à combattre le sort inhumain réservé aux personnes souffrant de troubles mentaux, vis-à-vis des préjugés et des discriminations profondément ancrés dans la plupart des sociétés. Les définitions du rétablissement et de ses valeurs fondamentales sont présentées telles qu’elles ont été développées dans le monde anglo-saxon ainsi que leur implication dans la reconfiguration des services. En outre, cet article propose une synthèse historique du développement des services de réadaptation psychiatrique, des mouvements d’usagers-mouvements des survivants et ex-psychiatrisé(e)s et de leur contribution à l’émergence de l’idée du rétablissement en tant que philosophie orientant les services de santé mentale et dispositifs connexes. Enfin, l’auteur discute des pratiques contemporaines visant à promouvoir le rétablissement et conclut sur un constat d’oscillation pendulaire entre croyance et preuves scientifiques caractérisant ce mouvement dans son histoire, dans le temps présent et certainement dans un avenir prévisible. |

| Summary, etc. | This article focuses on the history of the mental health recovery movement in the United States in the context of the development of mental health systems over the centuries, as well as presenting the author’s perspective on its current and future possibilities. The article places the recovery movement in the context of evolving ideas of social justice and efforts to overcome the inhumane treatment of individuals with mental health conditions that have reflected the deep-seated level of prejudice and discrimination in most societies. It reviews the definitions of recovery and its core values, as developed in the Anglo-Saxon world and their implications for the development of services. In addition, the chapter summarizes the history of the development of psychiatric rehabilitation services, the consumer – survivor, ex-patient movement and their contribution to the emergence of the idea of recovery as a vision to guide all mental health and related services. Finally, the author discusses current practices to promote recovery and the swinging pendulum of belief vs scientific evidence that characterizes the evolution of the recovery movement in the past, the present and likely for the foreseeable future. |
