François Mitterrand endosserait-il les habits de Ronald Reagan en mars 1983, tandis que Pierre Mauroy ferait du néolibéralisme sans le savoir ? L’examen des archives de la présidence de la République et de Matignon révèle le caractère néolibéral extrêmement discret, pour ne pas dire introuvable, de la politique économique socialiste. Si entrée de la France dans une forme de néolibéralisme économique il y eut, celle-ci est bien davantage à chercher dans les politiques suivies par les gouvernements Fabius et Chirac que dans celles menées par Pierre Mauroy. |

| Summary, etc. | Pierre Mauroy’s Rigorous Fight Against “Neoliberalism” (1981-1984)This article examines the widespread belief that French Socialist elites were quickly and decisively seduced by the charms of neoliberalism at the beginning of the 1980s. Did François Mitterrand dress up in Ronald Reagan’s clothes in March 1983, and did Pierre Mauroy unwittingly implement neoliberal economic policies? A thorough analysis of the archives of the French president and prime minister’s offices in fact reveals the incredibly discreet – if not downright invisible – contribution of neoliberal thought to Socialist economic policies at the time. If France did indeed enter into a neoliberal economic era during the 1980s, the roots of that transition should be sought under the subsequent Fabius and Chirac governments, rather than while Pierre Mauroy was at the helm. |
