| Summary, etc. | Cet article s’interroge sur la place de la violence sexuelle dans les activités quotidiennes de l’État colonial du Sud-Ouest africain allemand. Acteurs les plus visibles de cet État, les policiers cherchaient à vivre une masculinité ancrée dans les notion d’honneur, de martialité et de professionnalisme. Leur honneur était en même temps celui de l’État colonial en entier. Des actes de violence spécifiquement masculine, comme le viol, commis par ses représentants posaient un problème à la légitimité de l’État. Dans le cas examiné ici, les représentants de l’administration coloniale articulaient ce que l’honneur et la camaraderie représentaient pour eux. Les discussions sur ce que signifiait une conduite « honorable » étaient toujours des négociations sur la qualité de l’État colonial et de son programme. |

| Summary, etc. | This article examines whether – and how – gender-based violence formed part of the quotidian activity of State-building. As the most visible representatives of the State, policemen in German South-West Africa aspired to a specific type of masculinity that was honourable, martial, and professional in nature. Their individual honour simultaneously reflected the honour of the colonial State as a whole. Hence, when rape – a distinctively masculine form of violence – was committed by State representatives, this posed a problem with regard to State legitimacy. In the case examined here, colonial administrative representatives expressed what masculine honour and fellowship meant to them. Discussions of what constituted “honourable” behaviour were always implicitly also a dialogue on the nature of the colonial State and its agenda. |
