| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article explore le legs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale sur la culture populaire et politique dans l’Australie de l’après-guerre, notamment en ce qu’il affecte les relations que le pays entretient avec le Japon. Alors que les dirigeants politiques et les décideurs furent relativement rapides à trouver une nouvelle base aux relations avec le Japon, des doutes persistèrent dans l’opinion publique. Ainsi, une histoire sur le pouvoir salvateur du commerce et sur une convergence croissante des intérêts régionaux s’est retrouvée à côté d’une mémoire moins encline à mettre de côté les héritages de l’expérience de la guerre. Ces doutes persistèrent jusque dans les années 1990 et de nouvelles impulsions furent données avec les commémorations marquant le 50e anniversaire de la fin de la guerre. Les dirigeants australiens, désireux de trouver un nouveau discours et une nouvelle histoire qui les lieraient à l’Asie, commencèrent à placer l’expérience des prisonniers de guerre australiens sous une lumière différente. En vain. L’article montre que, malgré les liens stratégiques, économiques et culturels croissants, l’ombre de la guerre ne pouvait être entièrement surmontée. |

| Summary, etc. | This article explores the legacy of World War II on popular and political culture in post-war Australia, especially as it affected the country’s relationship with Japan. It contends that while political leaders and policymakers were relatively quick to put relations with Japan on a new footing, doubts lingered in the public imagination. Thus on the one hand a story about the healing power of trade and a growing convergence of regional interests sat uneasily alongside a public memory that was less inclined to put aside the legacies of the war experience. These doubts continued until well into the 1990s and were given new impetus with the commemorations to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the war. Australian leaders, eager to find a new language and a new history that would connect them to Asia, began to cast the Australian prisoner of war experience in a different light. But it was to no avail. The article shows that despite the growing strategic, economic and cultural ties, the war’s shadow could not be overcome entirely. |
