| Summary, etc. | RésuméAprès une apparente distanciation entre Washington et le Vatican dans les années 1960 et 1970 du fait du dialogue mené par ce dernier avec le bloc soviétique, les années 1980 ont parfois été perçues comme le théâtre d’une alliance entre les États-Unis et le Vatican, tous deux dirigés par des hommes fortement opposés à l’idéologie communiste. Pourtant, il convient de nuancer cette vision à la lumière des archives. Si les circonstances et les préoccupations parfois communes de Ronald Reagan et Jean-Paul II ont pu s’avérer propices à une certaine forme de coopération, cette dernière ne fut en rien systématique. Bien au contraire, l’analyse géopolitique de Jean-Paul II se révéla souvent fort éloignée de celle de son supposé allié, Ronald Reagan. |

| Summary, etc. | The United States and the Vatican in the 1980s : Beyond the « Holy Alliance »The 1960s and 1970s were characterized in appearance by a certain distancing between Washington and the Vatican because of the dialogue the Vatican maintained with the Soviet bloc. By contrast, the 1980s were sometimes thought of as a time of alliance between the United States and the Vatican, both led by men known for their strong opposition to communist ideology. Yet, archival material provides a more nuanced analysis. While the circumstances and the fact that Ronald Reagan and John Paul II shared certain concerns were conducive to some degree of cooperation, that cooperation was by no means systematic. On the contrary, John Paul II’s geopolitical vision was often far removed from that of his alleged “ally”. |
