| Summary, etc. | During the takeover of the American embassy in Tehran, on November 4, 1979, the archival records of the embassy were destroyed, then their pieces were put back together by the Iranians. The story of these archives can serve as an introduction to the tragedy of American-Iranian relations. Though partial and biased, this corpus provides us with a representative sample of the documents that foreign policy historians generally deal with. By reading them, we can also measure the extent to which the American embassy could be considered a “den of spies,” as denounced by the Islamic Republic of Iran to foment the politics of confrontation that have legitimized its existence ever since. |

| Summary, etc. | Détruites au moment de la prise d’assaut de la représentation américaine de Téhéran, le 4 novembre 1979, patiemment reconstituées par les Iraniens, les archives de l’ambassade des États-Unis en Iran constituent un point d’entrée privilégié de la tragédie des relations entre les deux pays. Au-delà de ses dimensions partiales et partielles, le corpus constitué est un échantillon représentatif de pièces permettant de se familiariser avec les sources de l’étude de la politique étrangère. Son analyse permet aussi de mesurer à quel point l’ambassade américaine pouvait être justement perçue comme un « nid d’espions », dénoncé par la propagande du régime islamique pour fonder la politique de confrontation aux sources de sa légitimité. |
