| Summary, etc. | Symboles d’un vaste mouvement culturel, les ciné-clubs sont, entre 1948 et 1955, l’enjeu de complexes débats économiques, idéologiques et politiques. Le 21 septembre 1949 est adopté un décret établissant le statut du cinéma non commercial, mais ce texte ne permet pas de résoudre les conflits qui opposent ciné-clubs et exploitants, attisant au contraire des débats houleux relayés par les revues affiliées aux fédérations de ciné-clubs et par la presse corporative. Pris dans ce rapport de force, l’État se réserve le rôle d’arbitre indécis, partagé entre des désirs contradictoires : l’envie de soutenir un cinéma vecteur d’éducation et de culture dans la France de l’après-guerre, le besoin d’encadrer une activité lucrative échappant au fisc, mais aussi la volonté de contrôler des groupements de spectateurs politisés, aux idées potentiellement subversives. Deux textes législatifs en 1954 et 1955, ainsi que l’évolution du contexte politique et culturel finiront par apaiser progressivement les tensions. |

| Summary, etc. | Film Clubs in TurmoilSymbols of a broad cultural movement, film clubs were the focus of complex economic, ideological and political debates between 1948 and 1955. A decree establishing the status of non-commercial cinema was passed on September 21, 1949, but this text did not resolve the conflicts between movie theaters and film clubs; on the contrary, it fueled heated debates, relayed by the journals affiliated with film club federations and the corporate press. Caught in the power struggle, the state took the role of an indecisive arbiter, torn between contradictory desires: the wish to support cinema as a vehicle for education and culture in postwar France, the need to supervise a lucrative untaxed activity, but also the desire to control groups of politicized spectators with potentially subversive ideas. Two legislative texts in 1954 and 1955, as well as the changing political and cultural context, eventually eased the tensions. |
