| Summary, etc. | La French Connection fut après-guerre, entre les mains du Milieu corse de Marseille, la principale filière mondiale de trafic d’héroïne. Depuis les années 1970, trois mythes l’entourent : elle aurait été caractérisée par une organisation centralisée et pyramidale ; elle aurait prospéré dans une certaine passivité, voire une complicité, des pouvoirs publics français ; et une lutte acharnée des polices française et américaine, sous les pressions politiques, l’aurait totalement anéantie en 1973. L’examen minutieux des archives et des sources nous montre au contraire qu’elle ne fut que la partie saillante d’un marché mondial et multinational très composite, que la collaboration franco-américaine fut plus ancienne et fructueuse qu’on ne le croit, et que la lutte du début des années 1970 ne fit que déplacer certains éléments du système. La French Connection ne fut en réalité qu’une étape dans la reconfiguration permanente du marché mondial de trafic illicite d’héroïne. |

| Summary, etc. | The French Connection: Between Myths and RealitiesAfter the war, the French Connection was in the hands of the Corsican Mafia of Marseilles, the main global network of heroin trafficking. Since the 1970s there were three myths surrounding it: it had a centralized and pyramidal organization; it thrived in a kind of passivity or even complicity with the authorities; and it was totally abolished in 1973, thanks to political pressure, after a ferocious battle waged by French and American police. Thorough examination of the archives and other sources show, on the contrary, that it was the emerging tip of a very complex world multinational market, that Franco-American collaboration was older and more successful than believed, and that the fight in the early 1970s merely moved certain elements of the system. The French Connection was in reality just one step in the permanent reconfiguration of the world market of illegal heroin smuggling. |
