| Summary, etc. | Cet article s’interroge sur l’investissement du champ médiatique américain par les avocats au cours des années 1920, à la faveur des transformations d’une industrie journalistique désormais nationale, de l’émergence d’une « culture de la célébrité » et de la fascination du public pour le crime et le fait divers dans un pays « fatigué d’événements ». Il montre comment des hommes comme Clarence Darrow transforment les procès en spectacles, dramatisent les enjeux et jouent avec les codes journalistiques pour mieux faire passer leurs idées. Ils utilisent leur nouvel espace médiatique pour rendre visibles les inégalités juridiques et sociales. Ces avocats réhabilitent de ce fait une profession perçue telle l’alliée des puissants et changent l’image même du droit, en le présentant comme un instrument d’émancipation et de libération, annonçant ainsi et popularisant les combats ultérieurs pour l’égalité des droits. |

| Summary, etc. | The Birth of the Celebrity Attorney in the United StatesThis article explains how a few American criminal lawyers (Clarence Darrow was the most famous amongst them) became “celebrity attorneys” during the 1920s. The emerging mass media, the birth of a “celebrity culture” and a general fascination for crime and criminals turned them into national figures. The Leopold and Loeb trial (1924) or the Scopes’ Monkey trial (1925) thus became national events. They were turned into shows by lawyers who loved to entertain the audience, to dramatize the issues and to frame their narrative in order to fit the journalists’ need for the sensational. The article thus demonstrates how these cause lawyers used the new media to make visible legal and social inequalities. They rehabilitated a profession that was often perceived as an ally of the rich. Lastly, they contributed to changing the image of the law, now seen as an instrument of emancipation and liberation, paving the way and popularizing the fight to come for civil rights. |
