| Summary, etc. | En août 1914, la mobilisation générale constitue sans nul doute un phénomène inédit à l’échelle nationale. Pour les couples, l’entrée en guerre signifie avant tout la séparation, expérience éminemment intime mais largement partagée au plan collectif. Cet article propose de saisir le moment décisif de la séparation conjugale en août 1914 à travers des aspects de l’expression des émotions. Il entend réfléchir à la façon dont la tendresse conjugale d’une part, la coulée des larmes d’autre part, sont mises en récit pour devenir des supports de la mobilisation, plaçant les relations de couple au cœur de la fabrication d’un discours sur l’événement. Il souhaite, en outre, par l’étude des premières lettres échangées après le départ du mobilisé, mettre en exergue l’importance, pour les couples séparés, du partage des émotions et des sentiments qu’ils sont contraints, par la distance, de formuler. |

| Summary, etc. | The Long GoodbyeIn August 1914, the general draft brought about by the impending war marked an unprecedented phenomenon on the national scale. For couples, the beginning of the war first and foremost entailed separation, an eminently intimate experience, but also one which was widely shared on the collective level. This article hopes to examine and understand the decisive moment of conjugal parting in August 1914 through the way in which emotions were expressed. We will think about how conjugal tenderness on one hand, and the shedding of tears on the other, were narrativised to support mobilization, putting couples’ relationships at the heart of the event’s rhetoric. By studying the first letters exchanged after the departure of those who were drafted, we also hope to show the importance of the shared emotions and feelings that the separated couples were compelled to express due to their distance. |
