| Summary, etc. | Cet article retrace l’émergence et la mise à l’épreuve d’une définition spécifique des forêts, conçue pour opérationnaliser l’engagement « zéro déforestation » pris par certaines firmes consommatrices d’huile de palme en réponse aux pressions des ONG de conservation. Il montre que cette définition résulte d’un compromis entre grandeurs industrielle et « verte », rendu possible par une modification du rapport de force initial. Il montre ensuite que la transposition de cette définition de l’Indonésie au Libéria a permis de renforcer sa robustesse en la mettant à l’épreuve avec succès. Mesurer la forêt à l’aune de cette définition a deux types de conséquences. Si sur le plan social, elle tend à invisibiliser les attachements familiers des populations locales, l’usage de cette définition semble bien contribuer à une meilleure conservation des forêts. L’article conclut en replaçant l’émergence du HCS dans les transformations actuelles des modes de gouvernance internationale de l’environnement. |

| Summary, etc. | Measuring the forests to combat deforestation?This paper analyzes the process through which a specific forest definition put forth by actors seeking to implement a « zero deforestation » objective in the palm oil sector has been institutionnalized. It demonstrates that this definition is a compromise between two orders of worth – industrial and green – and that its transposition from Indonesia to Liberia has contributed to its institutionnalization. It also shows that actors have been able to reach such a compromise thanks to an initial balance of power created by one of the actors. The article concludes on the consequences of the diffusion of such a forest definition. On the social side, while local populations and their familiar attachments to forests were at the begining not considered, they have been progressively integrated to the overall approach. On the environmental side, this approach seems to contribute to better forest conservation. |
