| Summary, etc. | Tout en revendiquant une pratique professionnelle fondée sur le principe d’égalité de traitement, les soignants procèdent quotidiennement à la catégorisation raciale des patients qu’ils reçoivent. Or, afin d’« humaniser les soins », les professionnels hospitaliers sont, depuis quelques années, également incités à adapter leur pratique professionnelle aux spécificités – notamment « culturelles » – de chaque patient. Cet article propose d’analyser l’impact des représentations racialisantes que les professionnelles rencontrées dans un service de gynéco-obstétrique d’un hôpital public parisien nourrissent au sujet des patientes qu’elles identifient comme roms, en termes de qualité de la prise en charge, d’offre de soin et de types de traitements proposés. Nous étudions dans quelles conditions le traitement différentiel proposé aux patientes en fonction de leur appartenance culturelle présumée est susceptible de fabriquer des discriminations. |

| Summary, etc. | From ‘global care’ to discrimination in treatmentEven though healthcare professionals declare that their practice is based on equal treatment principles, they use racial criteria to categorize their patients on a daily basis. For some time now, they have been encouraged to accommodate their professional practice to each patient’s specificity – including cultural characteristics –, in order to humanize care. This article analyses the impact of the racial representations healthcare professionals working in a Parisian public hospital’s gynaecologic and obstetric service have about patients they identify as Roma, in terms of quality of care and types of treatments. It explores under which circumstances the differential treatment proposed to the patients according to their presumed cultural belonging is likely to produce discrimination. |
