| Summary, etc. | Quels sont les critères de la respectabilité exigée des gays et des lesbiennes dans les espaces où ils et elles sont particulièrement intégré·e·s ? Reposant sur une enquête menée dans deux quartiers de Paris et New York, cet article montre que la mise à distance de la sexualité joue un rôle central dans la ville étasunienne, où l’homosexualité familiale fait, par ailleurs, l’objet d’une célébration et d’une surveillance intenses. Si les gays et les lesbiennes mariés gagnent en respectabilité dans les deux pays, l’esprit revendicatif est peu apprécié dans la capitale française, tout particulièrement pour ce qui concerne les lesbiennes. Les classements qui désignent, à travers la question de l’apparence notamment, celles que l’on accepte maintiennent une forte suspicion. En revanche, les stigmates attachés à l’homosexualité masculine, comme la « féminité », peuvent s’atténuer quand ils sont associés, aux yeux des hétérosexuel·le·s des classes moyennes et supérieures, à la détention d’un capital culturel. |

| Summary, etc. | What are the criteria of respectability required from gays and lesbians in spaces where they are particularly integrated? Based on fieldwork in two neighborhoods of Paris and New York City, this paper shows that keeping sexuality at a distance plays a central role in the American city, where familial homosexuality is both celebrated and surveilled. While married gays and lesbians gain respectability in both countries, the spirit of protest is still not appreciated in the French capital, particularly for lesbians. The categories which refer to the lesbians who are accepted, especially through the question of appearance, fuel a strong suspicion. In contrast, stigmas attached to masculine homosexuality, like “femininity”, can be alleviated when they are seen by middle- and upper-class heterosexuals as an element of cultural capital. |
