520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Can Psychoanalysis Dissolve the ‘Parental Atom’? In this article, Bernard Juillerat re-examines the notion of the ‘parental atom’ (atome de parenté) that Claude Lévi-Strauss first exposed in 1945 and which has fuelled much heated debate since then. The author of this article adopts the critical viewpoints of André Green, Marie-Blanche Tahon and certain other authors as far as the non-qualification of the mother/child relationship in Lévi-Strauss’s theoretical ‘atom’is concerned. The aim of this article is to confront the (open) atom based on the alliance, such as the creator of structural anthropology intended it to be, with the Oedipal atom (closed) of Freudian psychoanalysis, but also with diverse family cells (equally closed) that compose the starting points for a good number of myths in Papua New Guinea. The author concludes that, given a few adjustments, the Oedipal-type atom may well give rise, for the children’s generation, to an opening up towards the social sphere that would correspond, from a psychoanalytical point of view, to surpassing the Oedipus complex and, from a sociological point of view, to the creation of exchange.
