| Summary, etc. | Les agents biologiques ont été utilisés en tant qu’armes depuis très longtemps et leur histoire se confond avec celle des guerres. À côté des agents biologiques classiques (bactéries, virus, parasites, mycètes et toxines), le développement actuel des biotechnologies et de la génétique est à l’origine d’une évolution des risques que devront prendre en compte les conférences périodiques d’examen de la Convention de 1972 sur l’interdiction des armes biologiques. À côté du concept d’utilisation militaire de ces armes, de nouvelles menaces existent, liées à l’emploi des agents biologiques dans un cadre terroriste ou de sabotage, devant faire envisager une perspective globale des problèmes de défense. |

| Summary, etc. | Biological weapons Biological agents have been used as weapons for a very long time and their history is interwoven with the history of wars. Aside from classical biological agents (bacteria, viruses, parasites, mycetes, and toxins), biotechnological and genetic breakthroughs increase hazards which will have to be assessed during periodic conferences verifying the implementation of the 1972 Convention, forbidding the use of biological weapons. In addition to a possible military use of these weapons, new threats are arising, related to the use of biological agents for terrorist or sabotage activities. The problems of defense must therefore be examined from an overall point of view, taking this new situation into account. |
