520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Mythology is their theory of instincts. An Amerindian approach to the intrapsychic conflict. The Otomi Indians of Mexico assign to ritual exegeses and to dreams the functions that in other Amerindian cultural areas are solely conferred to myths, insofar as they are conceived as a founder discourse on the origins and on the destiny of Mankind. The exegeses are associated with shamanic sessions and generate a holistic view of the psychic apparatus. This apparatus is supposed to encapsulate the interactions between supernatural entities who keep up a permanent conflict in relation to one another. Such a conflict is revealed by the distribution of a set of ídolos (the artefacts that stand as the iconographic medium of the forces involved during the ritual process). This agonistic stance translates into a « political » discourse, since the interplay of these opposing forces reflects at one and the same time the internal, bodily order and the external, social and cosmic order. The theoretical work underlying these assumptions is carried out by the shaman experts in the name of a « native metapsychology », which is both an ideological fiction, and a conceptual frame monitoring ritual acts. |
