| Summary, etc. | The Motherliness of God Monotheistic religions have privileged paternal figures of God. However, a number of religions lay emphasis on the maternal attributes of the Divine. We shall look at several examples from ancient Egyptian beliefs, notably through representations of the ‘solar breast.’In Catholicism, we shall look at the language of mystics to study the reappearance of a desire for the maternal, in the form of words addressed either to Mary or to a maternalised form of Jesus. |
