| Summary, etc. | Alain de Mijolla, en fondant la Revue Internationale d’Histoire de la Psychanalyse, souhaitait par les nombreux sujets abordés pouvoir fournir des éléments de réponse à la question : un psychanalyste est-il mieux placé qu’un historien des idées pour écrire une histoire de la psychanalyse ? Est-il apte à rendre compte de l’évolution de sa pensée, de sa théorie et de sa pratique psychanalytique ? Une théorie psychanalytique n’est pas une œuvre purement spéculative et elle porte la marque de la subjectivité de son auteur, ce à quoi Freud lui-même n’a pas échappé, au milieu des polémiques et des préoccupations personnelles. Tout psychanalyste doit résister à la tentation du dogmatisme sans chercher à transformer des hypothèses aléatoires en vérités scientifiques, puisque, seule l’expérience clinique peut valider la pertinence d’un concept. La pratique de l’histoire de la psychanalyse doit conduire à une grande modestie théorique, elle n’est pas l’invention d’une nouvelle pensée mais l’interrogation fondamentale sur nos modes de pensée et sur les modalités d’investissement que nous en faisons. Nous avons à construire la mémoire non pas dans le sens de Historie (événements du passé) mais au sens de Geschichte, l’histoire de ce qui s’est passé, pour témoigner de cette histoire dont nous sommes partie prenante. |

| Summary, etc. | Writing the History of Psychoanalysis Alain de Mijolla, when he founded the Revue Internationale d’Histoire de la Psychanalyse, wished to explore a number of subjects in order to attempt to provide an answer to this essential question - is a psychoanalyst better placed than a historian to write a history of psychoanalysis? Is he or she better armed to account for the evolution of psychoanalytical thought, theory and practice? For psychoanalytical theory is not a matter of mere speculation but bears the marks of its author’s subjectivity, a truth that not even Freud escaped amid the disputes and personal preoccupations that marked his life. Each and every psychoanalyst must fight against the temptations of dogmatism, while at once resisting the desire to attempt to transform random hypotheses into scientific truths, since only clinical experience itself can indeed confer validation on the pertinence of a concept. Close practice of the history of psychoanalysis necessarily leads to immense modesty concerning its theory, and this practice is not to be seen as a means of inventing a new line of thought but of questioning our existing modes of thought and the way we invest them. Our role is to build up a memory of the past not as History (events from the past) but as Geschichte, the history of what happened, the history of which we are all protagonists and to which we may all bear witness. |
