| Summary, etc. | Résumé L’adverbe encore a un éventail sémantique particulièrement large en français moderne, allant de deux emplois aspectuels – l’un continuatif et l’autre itératif – jusqu’à plusieurs emplois comme connecteur discursif concessif. Entre ces deux pôles, on trouve divers autres emplois, tels un emploi quantifiant, un emploi d’adverbe de degré, etc. Dans cet article, j’émettrai l’hypothèse que encore est un marqueur polysémique, et j’essayerai de relier ses nombreux emplois à première vue très différents dans un réseau sémantique motivé dont le point d’origine est le sens continuatif. Ce faisant, je me servirai surtout de notions théoriques empruntées à Traugott (1990) et à Givón (1995). |

| Summary, etc. | The adverb encore (‘still, yet’) has a rather large number of different uses in modern French, ranging from two aspectual uses – continuative and iterative – to a number of uses as a concessive discourse connective, with several other uses (quantifier, degree adverb,...) in between. In this paper, I will argue that encore should be seen as polysemous, and I will attempt to tie these superficially very different uses together in a motivated semantic network of extension from an original, continuative, meaning. Theoretical notions borrowed from Traugott (1990) and Givón (1995) will figure prominently in the analysis. |
