| Summary, etc. | RésuméDans cet article, nous proposons une description sémantique de l’adverbe français toujours. Cet adverbe possède tout un faisceau d’emplois différents, qui du point de vue syntaxique sont tous de nature adverbiale, mais qui, au niveau sémantique, peuvent être vériconditionnels ou non-vériconditionnels, certains pouvant en outre être considérés comme étant de nature connective. Notre approche peut être caractérisée comme « polysémiste », ce qui signifie que nous considérons le lexème toujours comme étant doté d’une structure interne, où certains emplois se laissent dériver de façon motivée d’autres emplois, plus fondamentaux. Nous poserons la lecture temporelle comme le sens de base, dont les autres emplois peuvent être dérivés, et nous esquisserons les processus de dérivation probables (principalement la conventionnalisation d’inférences et la subjectification). |

| Summary, etc. | In this paper, I propose a semantic description of the French adverb toujours. This adverb has a number of different uses, which, syntactically speaking, are all adverbial in nature, but which, at the semantic level, may be either truth-conditional or non-truth-conditional, and some of which may moreover be considered as being of a connective kind. I take it that toujours is polysemous, and hence possesses an internal structure whereby some uses represent extensions of other, more basic, uses. I argue that the temporal reading of toujours is the basic sense, and I sketch the processes (principally the conventionalization of inferences and subjectification) that are likely to play a role on the derivation of the remaining senses. |
