520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. From Tragedy to History or the Metamorphosis of Barbarity Man is a profoundly bellicose creature, graced with an ego that seeks only to destroy others. At times the best of animals, man can also stoop to the lowest depths when he lives without law or justice and uses arms to impose his will. Building a protective rampart against war is a ‘political’project based on man’s urban existence and sense of citizenship. The civil bond thus established in relation to the city transcends social and all other bonds. The law is the best rampart for the protection of the civil bond. ‘Politics’ is a means of regulating conflicts, but the temptation of hegemony lingers not far behind when the ‘common good’is confused with ‘moral good.’In today’s world, the civil bond is under threat from the need felt to defend individual identity aroused in some because of the shrinking of public space that globalisation engenders. To create an identity based on a sense of citizenship, a moral personal leap of faith is necessary and the bonds which link the individual to a specific clan or tribe must be betrayed. The historical example of Drocton le Lombard is a perfect example of such betrayal and reminds us of the choice taken by Aeneas, the founder of Rome.
